Back to Mr. Collins, he is interested in Jane but then changes his interest towards Elizabeth when he discovers that Jane will probably be married to Mr. Bingley. Honestly, I think this guy just wants to strike it lucky and will settle for whatever he can get. After a few days, Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth who in turn tries to reject him as nicely as possible because she is interested in another man, Mr. Wickham.
Mr. Wickham is a solider whom the girls found quite charming when they ventured into town one day. He caught the eye of Elizabeth almost immediately. However when the two of them stumbled upon Mr. Darcy, they had a less than friendly conversation. It turns out that Darcy’s father had left a sum of money for Wickham (who was supposedly like another son to his father) but cheated him out of it and Wickham never saw a cent. Eventually we learn that this is actually just a big lie but Elizabeth doesn’t know that yet. She is invited to a ball that Mr. Wickham is supposed to be attending but is crushed to find out that he is no where to be found.
Later, Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy leave Netherfield and Jane is heartbroken because Mr. Bingley basically told her that what ever they had between them can be no more. Everyone is in shock that Mr. Bingley could have done that to such a sweet and innocent girl, so Jane finds comfort in going to live with the Gardeners in London for awhile to try and get over her recent loss of love.
Elizabeth is stunned to learn that her best friend Charlotte Lucas has been asked by Mr. Collins to marry him. She is extremely let down by Charlotte because she thinks she can do so much better than him (Elizabeth still thinks that this guy is an annoying creep). Elizabeth and Charlotte fight over this and eventually Charlotte leaves to move in with Mr. Collins. Elizabeth feels badly about what she said to her so she visits Charlotte in her new home and we are just going to have to keep reading to find out what happens there.
